The brand-new defibrillator was donated to the Cathedral by Community Heartbeat Trust, a national charity dedicated to the provision of this technology into the community.
Handing over the defibrillator, which will be used in the Cathedral's crypt, Martin Fagan, National Secretary of Community Heartbeat Trust said:
“Following a meeting with BT, whose offices overlook St Paul’s, we had lunch in the crypt, and whilst there, noticed the very large number of people. On asking if the Cathedral had a defibrillator, it transpired there was one on upper levels but nothing for the crypt. We therefore decided to donate a defibrillator to the Cathedral, along with a full support and a training programme for staff.”
"Whilst it is hoped that the equipment may never be used, this new device, along with the existing sites on the upper levels, will bring safety and reassurance to the millions of people visiting London’s most iconic building."
The Reverend Canon Michael Hampel, Precentor of St Paul's, added: "First aid is a crucial part of our care of visitors to St Paul’s and this new defibrillator is a welcome addition to our means of keeping people safe here. We’re very grateful to Community Heartbeat Trust for their generosity and imagination."
